COP Practical Research: Camille Walala

Camille Walala is a East London based textile based artist, however also practices art direction, interior design. Outside of traditional design practices she has a keen interest in pop-up restaurants combining her love of food with her distinctive bold print designs. She started by painting murals across East London with one of her favourite being a mural she painted on the back entrance of a house on Whitby Street. Since then she's gone on to paint five storey building to primary school walls. Recently Walala has transformed Greenwich Peninsula's Now Gallery (see figure 1)as part of Walala x Play in which visitors are encouraged to seek out anomalies within the patterns, as a 3-d spot the difference.

In contrast to instillations/murals Walala has also done printed work, creating cover art for Scoop (see figure 2) Magazine showing the diversity of her patterns as they can be used across mediums. This is further showcased within her Christmas takeover of Clerkenwell London (See figure 3) in which she created patterns for crackers, wrapping paper and gifts as well as the use of patterns within the shop floor. This application of pattern within print is intersting as this is how I'm looking to implement surface pattern within the branding for Heka in order to create a more distinctive and contrasting brand identity compared to existing products within the market. Furthermore due to the focus on primary colours mixed with pastels the patterns are very gender neutral and modern without looking childish due to the mix of pastels and bright colours.
